Small business owners, sole proprietors and jobseekers, join us and learn how social media is being used in the recruiting and hiring process!

Being at the global hub of social media innovation, NOVA commissioned a research study to help job seekers and employers better understand how social media are being used in the recruiting and hiring process. Highlights of this presentation include these key recommendations:

  • Develop a social media strategy, particularly for searches with large firms, growing firms and technology firms.
  • Not rely on social media exclusively in the job search process.
  • Build networks, online and otherwise.
  • Develop online profiles that are professional and devoid of inappropriate content.
  • Create and maintain a LinkedIn profile.

Guest Speaker Luther Jackson is the economic stimulus manager at NOVA, the non-profit, federally-funded employment and training agency in Sunnyvale that provides customer-focused workforce development services.  One of his primary tasks has been managing several labor market research studies designed to help NOVA and its customers gain a more sophisticated understanding of the dynamic Silicon Valley economy and the impacts on job seekers, employers, educators and other stakeholders.  Prior to joining NOVA in August 2009, Luther was a workforce consultant. He served as executive officer of the San Jose Newspaper Guild from 1995 to January 2009.  Before moving to California, he was a reporter at the Detroit Free Press, where he reported on the Michigan economy and several of the state's Fortune 500 companies.   Luther is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and is a former board member of the American Leadership Forum - Silicon Valley. He and his wife, Cecilia Deck, live in San Jose with their two sons.
